Trailing two sets to one, the Ray volleyball team rallied to win set four, 25-21 before falling 15-11 in set five to Stanley on Thursday night. Stanley took the 3-2 (15-25, 25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 15-11), five-set thriller despite Hayden Slikker setting a season-high with 17 kills.
“I thought we played a pretty solid match tonight, much better than we played the other night in Trenton,” Ray coach Michelle Dolan said. “We came back when we were down, so you can’t fault them on that. A few blocks off the hands adds to the points, and that was the difference.”
Ray led 15-14 just past the midway point of the fourth set before starting to pull away with kills by Britne Viall and Marissa Veach. Stanley fought off Ray set point at 24-17 with four consecutive points, but a service error ended the set 25-21, sending the match to a decisive fifth set.
In the fifth, Ray received help from Stanley attack errors to jump out to a 4-2 lead before Savanah Meyer battled the Blue Jays ahead with three kills in the set. After a Ray attack error gave Stanley match point, a kill from Abby Iverson would help Stanley clinch the match with its 15-11 set victory.
Stanley found itself down a set after Ray stormed out of the gate and held on for a 25-15 set-one victory.
The Blue Jays flipped the script in set two, evening up the match 1-1 with a 25-23 win. Ray led 12-4 and 23-19 in the second until the Blue Jays rallied back with a kill by Meyer, three by Lacey Meiers and an ace by Kaitlyn Lindberg, making it 24-23. Meiers would block a Slikker kill attempt to clinch the second set.
In the third, it was all Stanley racing out to a 16-9 lead until three consecutive Allison Ziebarth aces helped square it up 17-17 a few plays later. After another tie at 18-18, the Blue Jays would use a 7-2 run to close out the third set, setting up the fourth set rally and forcing of a fifth set by Ray.
Ziebarth posted her second-consecutive double-double with 37 assists and 12 digs, adding four aces. Slikker added 21 digs for a double-double as well. Maari Dolan led the defense with her 36 digs.
Jays fall to Trenton
The Jays ended a five-set bout with Trenton on Sept. 29 in a 3-2 loss.
After dropping the first set with a high-scoring 25-22 decision, the Jays battled back to go up 2-1 with 25-20 and 25-15 results. Trenton then gained the edge and took the final two sets 25-16 and 15-10 to victory.
As a team, Ray posted 43 kills and 95 digs in five sets.
Slikker had a team-high kill performance with 14. She also tabbed 25 digs toward the Jays’ effort.
Veach finished with 12 kills. She also posted 10 digs and three service aces on the night.
Ziebarth also put up some big numbers. Ziebarth had a team-high 35 assists and added another double-double with 17 digs. She also tabbed two aces for the Jays.
Dolan finished the match with eight kills and 18 digs. Viall was good for six kills, and Kelsey Perdue ended with three kills and 14 digs as well.
Ray finished with one win and four losses Friday and Saturday at a tournament in Burlington.
Pool play losses were 25-23, 26-24 to Griggs County; 25-14, 25-21 to Des Lacs-Burlington; and 25-9, 25-22 to Thompson. The Jays did sweep Beulah, 25-20, 25-8.
In the consolation bracket, Bishop Ryan knocked out the Jays in the first round, 25-21, 22-25, 15-11.
After visiting Divide County on Tuesday, Ray next travels to Glenburn to compete in the Northwest Conference tournament on Saturday.
