The MonDak Thunder football team advanced to the Montana state six-man championship Saturday with a 30-19 home defeat of Bridger.
The championship game is against Hot Springs at 1 p.m. MT on Saturday in Plentywood. (The Montana High School Association requires the game to be held in-state, not in Grenora.)
Brian Field ran for a 2-yard touchdown and returned a fumble 14 yards for another, and MonDak turned the tide after falling to Bridger 32-20 in the first week of the season.
It will be the second trip to the championship for the Thunder (11-1), who lost to Geraldine-Highwood two years ago.
The scoring started quickly. Jeff Whitlow ran in from the 1 and Kade Guenther took a pass from Jeremiah Paine 29 yards into the end zone for a 14-0 lead in the opening quarter. (Paine added the conversion.)
Nearly as swiftly, it was 14-12. Russel Zentner threw a touchdown pass to Colby Zentner, then Colter Zentner to Ryan Zentner.
Field ran in his first TD in the third, followed by a Paine kick. Colter Zentner ran in a score from the 5 before Field took a fumble to paydirt.
Hot Springs, which won the state title in 2012, saw its offense carry it past Valier 58-8 for its berth in Saturday’s championship game.
