Two double-digit scoring runs by the Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood-Mavericks in the second half turned out to be too much for the Divide County boys’ basketball team to overcome Dec. 22 in Crosby as the Maroons suffered a 61-28 loss.
“In the first quarter up until two to three minutes into the second quarter, we don’t look that bad -- we were only down six,” Divide County head coach Rodney Johnson said. “The effort was there; I don’t know what happened.”
The Maroons led once, at 2-1 one minute in, thanks to a Keaton Oien shot.
Leading 24-15 in the final minute of the opening half, the Mavericks ripped off 11 unanswered points to go up 35-15 midway through the third quarter. After the run ended with two Jacob Bird free throws, MLS’ outburst continued with another 11-0 run to make it a 46-17 contest with just under seven minutes to play.
“I think the boys understand why the games turn like that,” Johnson said. “We’ve just got to get in shape and keep that intensity through the whole game.”
MLS forward Isaac Undlin finished with a game-high 16 points, including making 8 of 12 foul shots.
For Divide County, Bird poured in nine points (including 5 of 6 foul shots). Tyler Deering also chipped in with seven points, while Ryder Beauclair tallied 10 rebounds.
“Ryder actually played very good defense,” Johnson said. “Isaac Undlin is a very good player, and Ryder did pretty well on him.”
Coming up, the Maroons will return to action this Saturday afternoon (4:30 p.m.) at home against Sawyer. The girls play at 3 p.m.
