Maroons will play fewer varsity games in 2017-18

By Jody Michael

The Divide County High School boys’ basketball program will condense its varsity and junior varsity teams into one squad in the 2017-18 season and play a smaller but still-undetermined number of varsity opponents.

The decision came at the school board’s regular meeting Wednesday last week, with the parents of several players in attendance engaging in a two-hour-long discussion on the program’s short- and long-term future.

The varsity team has won three games this season and lost 16, and only one loss was by fewer than 20 points. In the past three years, DC is 6-55.

“The losses we’ve had have not been very close,” varsity head coach Rodney Johnson said. “Nobody wants to get beat by 50 each season.”
