Girls season ends with district tourney losses

By Jody Michael
Sophomore Alli McCoy finished with 20 points, but the Divide County girls’ basketball season finished with a 48-38 loss vs. Powers Lake in a region-qualifier game in the District 16 tournament.
The Maroons end with a 9-12 overall record.
Brianna Honrud finished with 19 points. Grace Hove rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points.
“They out-toughed us, basically,” Divide County head coach Kent Harding said. “They got some of those big rebounds. They hit big shots when they were there for them. They just got some of the things that we needed to get.”
DC shot 15 of 63 from the field and 8 of 15 from the line.
“We needed some shots to fall for us at the end,” Harding said. “We had some real nice open looks again.”
The scoring began with an 8-0 Powers Lake run, with Honrud beginning the stretch with two 3-pointers, until McCoy buried two free throws to stop the Rancher rush with 5:03 left in the first quarter.
DC chipped away at the gap and ultimately took the lead at 22-21 following two more McCoy free throws with 2:59 left in the second stanza.
Powers Lake finished the first half with five consecutive points to hold a 26-22 lead going into the break.
The third frame began with a free throw from Powers Lake’s Sydney Titus. McCoy and Lauryn Heide responded with buckets to nearly knot it all up, 27-26.
Powers Lake’s lead went up to seven and back down to three with 3:52 left until the Ranchers hit the final seven points to seal the deal.
Divide County lost in the quarterfinal Thursday to Ray, 36-35. McCoy netted a game-high 21 points. Maari Dolan scored 12 points for the Jays.
McCoy and Heide received all-district honors after the tournament.
