Despite forcing two turnovers, Divide County’s football squad could not stop Cavalier from scoring, while the Maroons’ offense struggled to put points on the board in a 48-8 loss to the Tornadoes during the 2016 season opener at Cal Andrist Field on Friday night.
Cavalier managed 417 yards of offense on the night, including 83 on one 13-play touchdown drive.
“Poor tackling was one of the major problems defensively,” DC defensive coach Nate Nelson said. “We have to get better at that if we are going to improve as a team. We were not aggressive enough against the run game and gave up too many yards after contact.”
Trailing 32-0 in the second quarter, Divide County got on the board as sophomore quarterback Dejuan Jenkins ran for a 9-yard touchdown and the two-point conversion to complete a four-play, 33-yard drive.
The Maroons had a short field thanks to a 24-yard kick return by Aidan Eriksmoen and a horse-collar penalty on the Tornadoes.
On the final play of the half, however, Cavalier’s Austin Urlaub ran in a 1-yard touchdown, one of his four scores on the night, after a 32-yard pass on the previous play to Andy Rintala, who stepped out of bounds with one second on the clock.
DC’s two fumble recoveries, forced by Troy Knudson and Tyler Deering, were the only times the defense managed to stop Cavalier from scoring.
The offense collected 85 rushing yards to Cavalier’s 332 and completed two passes on nine attempts: a 11-yarder from Jenkins to Deering and a 19-yarder from Eriksmoen to Jenkins.
The Maroons also had a few troubles snapping the football, which caused one of their three turnovers.
“Putting the ball on the ground eight times will not keep in you in many games,” DC offensive coach Bob Brown said. “Cavalier is a good team, but we made them look even better.”
The Tornadoes struck first when Urlaub ran in from the 3 in the opening stanza. Cavalier reached the end zone once more in the first quarter, as Urlaub scored on a 12-yard run.
In the second quarter, Urlaub added a 59-yard touchdown and handed off to Rintala for a 11-yard score to take a 32-0 lead. Tristen Sott scored from the 13 in the fourth quarter.
Deering was Divide County’s leading tackler on the evening with nine.
The Maroons will return to action Friday in Trenton for a 7 p.m. contest.
“They have one of the fastest players in the state at quarterback,” Nelson said. “We will see a lot of the same spread run game we saw from Cavalier.”
“We need to regroup and have a physical week of practice, because we need to get a lot tougher,” Brown said.
