The Divide County volleyball team finished 5-1 in the Watford City Invitational on Saturday.
The Maroons won all three pool-play matches: 16-25, 25-12 to the Watford City JV team; 25-18, 22-25 to Trenton; and 25-17, 25-11 to New Town.
In the gold bracket, the Maroons fell 25-12, 25-16 to the Bismarck High School sophomores before recovering to win 25-16, 25-20 against Trinity Christian and 22-25, 25-22, 15-10 over Trenton.
Divide County falls to Ray
Divide County suffered a 3-0 (25-23, 25-8, 25-19) setback to Ray on Thursday evening.
DC fell behind early in the first set as Ray jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but the Maroons battled back and took a 21-17 lead. However, Ray pulled ahead with five consecutive points on the way to the 25-23 victory.
Divide County couldn’t find a rhythm in the second set, committing six attack errors and having almost no success on offense. The funk led to a 25-8 defeat in the frame and put the Maroons down 2-0 overall for the match.
“I thought we’d come back out strong in that second game,” DC coach Lisa Ford said. “We were kind of staring at one another instead of moving to get the ball.”
The lull carried over into the third set as DC fell behind 13-5. The Maroons narrowed the margin to 22-17 behind three kills and four Ray attack errors. The momentum was broken when Divide County stalled and fell 25-19.
Kasha Bakewell led the Maroons with three kills.
Setters Sierra Grote and Makenzie Olson directed the attack with four and three assists, respectively. Bakewell and Lauryn Heide finished the match with a team-best three blocks, while sophomore McKenzie Hallgren led the team in digs with 19.
Hayden Slikker led Ray offensively with 10 kills. Slikker was also strong behind the service line, recording four service aces. Senior Allison Ziebarth led the Jays with 25 assists. Juniors Maari Dolan and Britne Viall led the Ray defense with 22 digs.
Maroons fall short at Trinity
Divide County was defeated by Region 8 foe Trinity Christian on Sept. 8 in non-district action at Williston.
Bakewell and Alli McCoy led the way on offense for the Maroons, tying each other with five kills in the losing effort.
Hallgren turned in another strong performance on defense with 21 digs for the Maroons. Olson totaled 11 digs.
After hosting Tioga on Tuesday, the Maroons return to the court on Thursday vs. Kenmare and Sept. 22 at Burke County.
