Volleyball teams pick up big district wins

By Jody Michael
Ray won a hard-fought, five-set battle on Thursday evening at Kenmare (15-25, 25-20, 25-18, 24-26, 15-10).
“We knew it’d be a tough battle,” Ray head coach Michelle Dolan said. “The top four teams in the district are very evenly matched. It could have gone either way.”
Hayden Slikker and Marissa Veach combined for 21 kills and posted 13 and 20 digs, respectively. Meanwhile, Maari Dolan registered eight kills, to go along with 15 digs.
Also reaching double figures were Kelsey Perdue (10 aces, 13 digs) and Allison Ziebarth (18 assists).
Kenmare (23-12, 8-4 District 16) handled the first set 25-15. Ray (14-14, 9-2) held an 11-6 lead after a seven-point run, but Kenmare relinquished it on their own ensuing 15-2 run.
The Jays returned and won the following two frames, 25-20 and 25-18.
Both teams traded points in the second set until the Jays managed to grab hold of the stanza late. In the third set, Perdue served the Jays from a 15-8 deficit to a 22-15 lead with 14 consecutive serve points and several aces.
“We had some good service from Kelsey Perdue that got us back in it, and a good streak from Britne Viall,” Dolan said.
The match headed to the deciding set after Kenmare won the fourth, 26-24.
After a slow start for Ray led to a 4-1 deficit, the Jays grabbed leads at 7-6 and 10-9. After Kenmare tied the match at 10, Ray rattled off four straight points for match point before a Kenmare attack error secured the win.
Ray will return home for a Tuesday match against Parshall.
Tioga victorious too
Tioga defeated Burke County 13-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-18 at home on Monday last week for its first district win of the season. Jayden Hodges and Nicole Postovit each had three service aces for the Pirates.
Following was a Thursday trip to Powers Lake, where the Ranchers took a 25-13, 25-14, 25-9 sweep. Full stats were not reported.
Tioga’s final regular-season match is Monday at home vs. Trinity Christian.
