Practice for the spring sports season in Tioga and Ray is in full swing, with two teams preparing for a return to the state championships.
The Williams County boys’ track and field team sent four representatives to the state championships last year. Atati Mita finished third in the discus throw with his best throw of 145-5 and fourth in the javelin with a throw of 167.
Williams County also sent its boys’ 4x800-meter relay team of Mita, Patrick Frise, Tyler Larson and Logan Aadnes, who finished 14th with a time of 9 minutes, 8.34 seconds.
In addition, the Tioga boys’ golf finished in ninth at the state meet, and Mitchell Fifer earned seventh place individually at 6-over-par.
Track and field
The Williams County track and field programs begin the 2016 season with a home meet at Tioga High School on Tuesday next week at 4 p.m.
Following the opening meet, Williams County will then return to action on April 15 at Watford City.
Tioga is also hosting the Northwest Conference junior varsity and junior high meet April 19, in addition to varsity meets April 22 and May 5 and a junior high meet May 10.
The Northwest Conference varsity meet is May 12 at Watford City.
The region championship meet is May 21 in Minot, and this year’s state meet is May 27-28 in Bismarck.
Becky Jungemann, Justin Nelson and Kelli Heier are coaching the teams this year.
Tioga golf
The 2016 Tioga High School boys’ and girls’ golf teams began practice last week, once again under the direction of head coach Ryan Albrecht.
The Pirate boys return all four of last year’s top finishers: junior Fifer and sophomores Carter Valliere, Brandon Skabo and Tyler G. Larson. Juniors Parker Jackson and Noah Bentley, sophomore Alex Holmen and freshman Cameron Taylor will also golf for the Pirates.
“They work hard and definitely should be challenging for a top-three finish at regionals to qualify for state,” Albrecht said.
On the girls’ side, sophomore Grace Ramberg returns alongside newcomers Juli Christofferson and Dantae Knudson.
The state meets are May 31-June 1 in Jamestown (boys) and Carrington (girls).
