Tioga hangs on at Ray

By Jody Michael
The Pirates’ defense registered eight takeaways as Tioga held off Ray 28-12 on the Jays’ homecoming night Friday to win the schools’ first meeting since their Williams County Firestorm co-op ended.
“They held through and won the game,” Pirates coach Tim Schaffer said. “If we can win that turnover battle, we’re going to win a lot of ballgames.”
Though Ray threatened to wipe away a 28-6 halftime deficit with three fourth-quarter appearances in Pirate territory, Tioga left the Jays with just one second-half touchdown run by Atati Mita before Austin Hove’s interception with 1:10 left clinched the road win.
That was no simple task before a red- and black-clad homecoming crowd eager for Ray to beat its former teammates from Tioga, who now have a winning streak of three games.
Parker Jackson got things going early with a 67-yard interception return for a touchdown. Three second-quarter TDs -- Devon Wilharm’s 8- and 11-yard runs, and Jacob Porras’ 23-yard reception from Cole Marmon -- made it 28-0.
The Pirates held Ray’s Garrett Hodenfield to 7-of-19 passing for just 105 yards and allowed 160 yards rushing, 83 of which were from Mita’s touchdown. Mita also reached the end zone on an 18-yard pass play 13 seconds before halftime.
Wilharm had 120 yards rushing on 17 attempts, and Carsen Canfield 88 yards on 18 tries, as Tioga outrushed Ray 224-160. The lone mistakes were two fumbles, by Porras and Canfield, but neither led to Ray scores.
Ray, meanwhile, must regroup from a night of mostly what-ifs that spoiled hopes of beating Tioga in their first meeting since before the co-op began in 2002.
“We’ve just got to learn from our mistakes,” coach Steve Perdue said. “Too many turnovers, and early in the game we just made some mistakes that you just can’t come back from if you make too many of them.”
