Tioga falls to New Salem in opening round

By Jody Michael
The Tioga football team fell to New Salem-Glen Ullin on Saturday afternoon in the first round of the North Dakota high school playoffs at New Salem, 56-14.
The Pirates finished the season with a record of 5-4.
New Salem (6-3) jumped out to an early lead, scoring a touchdown in the game’s first three minutes, before the Pirates managed to move the ball and get on the board.
Tioga scored its first touchdown at the 9:08 mark of the second quarter to take a 7-6 lead. Junior running back Devon Wilharm took a handoff from Cole Marmon and broke through to the end zone for a 91-yard scoring play.
New Salem and Tioga would trade scores in the second quarter, with a New Salem touchdown and a 31-yard Marmon-to-Wilharm pass completion to push the Tioga lead to 14-12 at 4:34 of the second quarter.
New Salem added a 15-yard touchdown run from Cullen Seeger to push the score to 18-14 at 2:35. The Pirates fumbled away the ball on their next possession, and Seeger ran it in again for the 24-14 halftime score.
“Right before the half, they got that touchdown -- that really hurt us, momentum-wise,” Tioga head coach Tim Schaffer said. “They got the momentum there. They were just more physical than we were today.”
The Pirates would not again threaten the Holsteins, who got on a roll and tacked on four more touchdowns in the third quarter and one in the fourth quarter.
Schaffer said he commended his squad for their effort and accomplishments this season.
“We can’t complain,” Schaffer said. “I told the kids, ‘You need to make sure you walk off the field with your heads held high. You finished 5-4 in a three-way tie for second in the conference. You had a heck of a year.’”
Wilharm ended the game with nine carries for 114 yards. Carsen Canfield had 15 carries for 51 yards.
The Pirates’ passing game was held to 37 yards on three completions and 10 attempts. The offensive unit was limited to 1-of-11 on third-down conversion opportunities.
