Tioga crushed, 58-14; playoff berth on line Friday

By Jody Michael
Host Divide County cruised past visiting Tioga 58-14 on Friday, easily handling a matchup that looked closer on paper.
The Maroons did not exactly neutralize Tioga running back Carsen Canfield, who came into the game with 15 touchdowns and finished Friday with 239 rushing yards, but they did limit him and the Pirates to two scores, of 41 and 80 yards.
DC quarterback Dejuan Jenkins had 11 rushes for 260 yards. He ran for scores of 50, 7, 68, 44 and 18 yards, all in the first half. Those, plus Aidan Eriksmoen’s 2-yarder, gave Divide County a 30-point halftime cushion.
“We played hard; we just didn’t execute very good,” Tioga head coach Tim Schaffer said. “Execution was poor, and we couldn’t get any stops.”
The Maroons’ victory was revenge from when Tioga prevailed against them a year ago, 27-22.
Tioga (3-4, 3-3 Region 6) has lost two games in a row after previously having won three straight.
The Pirates travel to Parshall-White Shield (3-4, 2-4) on Friday and would advance to the state playoffs with a win. Otherwise, they would enter into a tiebreaker scenario with Parshall and possibly Trenton (2-5, 2-4).
“These guys know this is a playoff week for us,” Schaffer said. “We win, we’re in -- pretty simple.”
The Pirates, who are now 14-30 all-time against Divide County, allowed scores on all but three possessions.
“Right now, everyone’s stronger and quicker than us,” Schaffer said. “We played too high; we need to work on getting our pad level lower.”
The Maroons (5-2, 5-1 Region 6) have four wins by 30 or more points and three consecutive games with eight or more touchdowns.
Ray downed vs. MLS
In its final home game of the season Friday, Ray football fell 46-0 to Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood. The loss dropped Ray to 0-7 on the season, 0-6 in Region 6, while MLS improved to 6-1, 6-0.
The Jays’ opening drive ended in a punt, which the Mavericks’ Statler Olson ran for a 68-yard touchdown. The deficit continued to grow with a total of six touchdowns and a safety, all in the first half.
“It was another tough game against a very good team,” Ray head coach Steve Perdue said. “We could not get any consistency or rhythm going on offense and could not stop them on defense.”
Ray hits the road Friday for a matchup against the Kenmare-Burke County Honkers (5-2, 5-1) at 7 p.m.
“We need a good week of practice to get ready for an excellent Kenmare team to finish our season,” Perdue said.
