By Jody Michael
The Tioga boys’ basketball team dropped Saturday’s game at Ray against MonDak, 63-48. The Pirates were 3 of 17 (17 percent) from beyond the arc en route to its second loss out of five games in an eight-day span.
Tioga (6-5) kept the game close through the first half. The Pirates led 18-17 with 4:50 on the second-quarter clock. MonDak (9-0) went on a 9-0 run to take a 26-18 lead.
The Thunder began the second half on another 9-0 run to take a 15-point lead, 37-22, with 5:46 left in the third quarter. The Pirates trailed by as many as 21 points before a late rally trimmed the Thunder’s lead to 15 in the final seconds.
“We’re in a stretch of seven games in 11 days,” head coach Justin Nelson said. “I think that was our one that wasn’t very pretty.”
Patrick Frise’s 29 points led the Pirates’ offense, as did his team-high 10 rebounds. The double-double was his 10th in 11 games this season.
Kade Guenther scored 15 to lead MonDak, while Daulton Holecek and Kevin Rust each added 12.
“I give them a lot of credit,” Nelson said of MonDak. “They do a lot of little things right.”
Tioga dominates in rout
Frise scored 25 points with 10 rebounds, Parker Jackson had 19 and Jacob Porras finished with 17 points and six assists to help Tioga pull away from Burke County 74-57.

Tioga punched back with a 23-13 fourth quarter run to seal the 10-point victory.
