Tioga beats Parshall for playoff berth

By Jody Michael
Carsen Canfield ran for 417 yards and six touchdowns, and the Tioga football team came from behind to defeat Parshall-White Shield 74-36 Friday with a playoff berth on the line.
The Pirates (4-4, 4-3 Region 6) trailed 22-14, but 26 unanswered points put the game away and kept the season alive.
Caleb Johnson had two touchdowns for Tioga.
“We had a shootout with Parshall,” Tioga coach Tim Schaffer said. “We made more plays than them and played well. We knew we would give up some points, but we had some big stops to get a lead and keep the lead. The O-line played well to open up some holes.”
Tioga scored first on a Canfield 44-yard touchdown run, but the Braves (3-5, 2-5) scored 22 of the next 29 points to take an eight-point lead.
A Canfield score and a two-point conversion tied the game, and Tioga scored twice more in the second quarter and once at the start of the third.
Parshall answered with a 98-yard run by Jelani Foote to cut the margin to 40-28.
From there, the Pirates continued to pad the lead, as Canfield’s 98- and 20-yard touchdowns pushed it to 52-28. Johnson then capped another touchdown drive, and Austin Hove and Cameron Taylor added fourth-quarter scores.
Tioga is headed east for the opening playoff round, as the Pirates are set for a 2 p.m. kickoff Saturday at Towner-Granville-Upham (5-3, 4-2 Region 4).
Ray falls to Kenmare, 66-6
The Ray football team came up short Friday, falling to host Kenmare-Burke County, 66-6.
Ray ran for 61 yards and threw for 26, highlighted by an 8-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Garrett Hodenfield to wide receiver Derek Hale.
“It was a difficult season with injuries and tough outcomes,” Ray coach Steve Perdue said. “I am proud of the group that continued to come to practice and play hard in games. This old coach takes his hat off and salutes them for their tenacity.”
Ray is forming a co-op team with Powers Lake, called the Outlaws, to debut in 2017.
