Ray softball tops Watford City, 8-7

By Jody Michael
Sophomore pitcher Courtney Townsend had a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning as she helped the Ray softball team top Watford City 8-7 on Thursday afternoon in Ray.
“Courtney is doing really well for us pitching-wise, which is what keeps us in the games,” Jays head coach Matt Ray said, “and we actually got some good hits. We’ve been hitting well.”
Ray (4-1) opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first with Townsend helping her cause by doubling to left, scoring freshman Lindsey Beech.
Watford City answered in the top half of the third with a run on no hits: an error, stolen base, passed ball and wild pitch.
The Jays tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third. Beech and fellow freshman Abby Hickel drew walks before classmate Kinley Bergstrom plated both with a double. But Watford scored two in each of the next two innings for a 5-3 lead.
Ray reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth through RBI hits by Bergstrom, senior Hayden Slikker and junior Kelsey Perdue, then went ahead again in the sixth after the Wolves had tied the score at 6. The Jays led off with two walks before getting two out, at which point Townsend cleared the bases with a single to right.
Watford City rallied in the seventh, drawing two walks with one out. A ground out on the next play scored a run to make it 8-7. Townsend settled down to strike out the next batter looking to close the win. She struck out seven in seven innings.
Jays lose 11-1 to DLB
Ray dropped an 11-1 decision to Des Lacs-Burlington-Lewis and Clark on April 14.
Beech drove in the Jays’ only run with an RBI double in the top of the fifth inning to cut the Lakers’ lead to 8-1. Perdue and fellow junior Maari Dolan had the lone other hits for Ray, who was 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
The Lakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the second. After two more runs in the second, the Lakers tacked on three more in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth.
The Jays met Central McLean on Tuesday and now host Heart River on Friday and Beulah on Monday, both at 4:30 p.m.
