Ray softball starts season 2-0

By Jody Michael
The Ray softball team scored three runs in the first inning and four more in the second to beat Stanley, 7-3, on Thursday afternoon.
Ray (2-0) scored three runs on two hits in the first inning. Maari Dolan and Hayden Slikker both collected an RBI.
After that, Stanley clawed back with a run in the second inning, but Ray sent eight to the plate in the bottom of the frame and scored four runs on three hits.
“We came out in the beginning and just started hitting the ball early,” Jays head coach Matt Ray said. “I think that’s what really helped us, because we got seven runs really quick.”
Dolan went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Stanley came back at Ray, scoring two runs in the top of the third. Ray’s Courtney Townsend, who earned the win, limited the damage by striking out 10 Blue Jays in the game and stranding four baserunners in the final three innings.
Ray improved to 2-0 on the season, having also beaten Westhope-Newburg-Bottineau 12-11 on April 5.
“I can’t ask for much better for a second-year team,” Ray said. “Courtney does help us out big time with her pitching ability.”
Westhope held a 10-6 lead in the middle of the fourth inning, but Ray scored six unanswered runs to take a 12-10 lead before the visitors added a run in the top of the seventh.
Dolan and Townsend led Ray at the plate with two hits each. Townsend went 2-for-3, while Dolan went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Lindsey Beech, Abby Hickel and Kinley Bergstrom each recorded two runs scored, while Slikker recorded two RBIs. On the mound, Townsend gave up six earned runs on seven hits with 13 strikeouts.
Westhope scored four runs in the top of the first inning and added two runs in the top of the second inning to increase its lead to 6-0.
The Jays scored three runs in the bottom of the second for a 6-3 deficit as Slikker doubled home Britne Viall and Callie Townsend and scored on a Bergstrom ground out.
Westhope took an 8-3 in the top of the third on two passed balls. Dolan singled home Beech in the bottom of the third, and she and Hickel stole home for an 8-6 score.
Two more Westhope runs in the top of the fourth, on steals of home, made it a 10-6 lead until Bergstrom scored on a Madison Daniel single in the bottom of the fourth and Viall batted in Kelsey Perdue in the fifth to make it 10-8.
Ray took the lead, 12-10, by scoring four runs in the sixth inning. Bergstrom, Beech, Hickel and Dolan all singled and came around to score.
Courtney Townsend allowed one run in the seventh on a walk and passed ball but otherwise struck out the side to end the game.
Ray traveled to Kenmare on Monday, hosted Washburn on Tuesday and now visits Des Lacs-Burlington on Thursday and Central McLean next Monday.
