The Ray girls basketball team defeated the Divide County Maroons 55-40 on Thursday evening at Ray High School.
Junior Marissa Veach scored 30 points off a 13-of-21 effort from the field. The 30 points tied a season high. Maari Dolan scored 15 points.
“They were ready to go, which was nice,” Jays head coach Matt Ray said. “I gave them Christmas break totally off.”
Alli McCoy led the Maroons in scoring with 22 points, followed by McKenzie Hallgren with 10 points.
Ray led by as many as 13 in the first half before Divide County went on a 22-4 run to take a 34-29 lead. In the final 1:19 of the third quarter, two Veach baskets with two Allison Ziebarth free throws in between gave the Jays a 35-34 lead going into the fourth quarter. Ray didn’t let up in the fourth quarter and outscored Divide County, 20-6.
“I knew if we could get a high-tempo game that they would get tired,” Ray said. “We have a bench that’s deep enough that it helps us out.”
The Jays scored 20 points twice more in the first two quarters of their 61-24 rout of Burke County on Friday night.
Dolan matched her Thursday total with 15 points and added nine rebounds while Veach had 13 points and Ziebarth and Kelsey Perdue had nine apiece.
The Jays’ 41 points in the first half were a season-high, but the 61 total points fell six points shy of their best.
Still, it added up to an easy win in the second leg of a two-games-in-two-nights stretch.
Burke County never led, shot 21 percent and had its losing streak extended to five games.
Ziebarth had 16 rebounds, and Abby Hickel finished with eight points off the bench for Ray.
The Jays return to action on Thursday with a 7:15 p.m. game at Stanley. Saturday’s matchup is at home at 2:30 against Underwood, preceding a rematch with Divide County next week at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Crosby.
