A return to district play gave the Ray volleyball team a chance at a rebound on Thursday night at Burke County, and the Jays responded with purpose.
Ray was in control throughout the night, only trailing briefly at the start of the match, en route to a 25-6, 25-15, 25-11 sweep.
Senior Marissa Veach recorded a match-high 12 kills and two blocks.
“I think Marissa had a nice showing,” Ray head coach Michelle Dolan said. “When we got the ball to her, she almost always put it in.”
Fellow senior Maari Dolan was also a force, recording nine kills and a team-best nine digs.
Ray improved to 6-6 on the year and remained undefeated in District 16 play. Burke County remained winless within the district.
The Jays looked impressive out of the gate, getting out to a 15-3 lead early behind a handful of senior Kelsey Perdue’s eight total aces in the match.
“Kelsey Perdue was really serving well for me,” Michelle Dolan said. “The one thing we’ve been working on is getting some harder serves going.”
Burke County was only able to win two points on serve in the entire first set.
Ray took a 10-2 lead in the second set, and Burke was not able to get closer than five points the rest of the frame. Veach added most of her kills in the second set, while Maari Dolan took over in the third.
“The three seniors have been real steady players for us,” Michelle Dolan said.
Ray opens week with 3-1 loss
Ray fell to Watford City, 3-1 (12-25, 27-25, 26-24, 26-24) in non-district action Sept. 19. The two teams had last met in last season’s Region 8 championship, which Ray won.
Veach, Maari Dolan and Savannah Boone led the Jays offensively with 12 kills each on the evening. Dolan led the defense with 40 digs.
Ray’s matches this week are Tuesday vs. Trenton, Thursday in Stanley and Saturday at a tournament in Burlington.
“I always look forward to going to that,” Michelle Dolan said of the invitational. “No matter what, even if we go in there and lose everything, we always come out a better team -- quicker-reacting, and we know what needs to be done better.”
The Jays then host Divide County on Tuesday next week.
