Pirates rally to top Tigers

By Jody Michael
The Tioga football team exploded for 21 unanswered points in the second half and overwhelmed Trenton-Trinity Christian 34-20 on Friday night in a game at Tioga.
The Pirates (1-2, 1-1 Region 6) and Tigers (0-3, 0-2) were tied 20-20 at the end the third quarter when Carsen Canfield turned a back-and-forth contest in Tioga’s favor.
After Canfield had sprinted for a game-tying 32-yard touchdown, he broke the tie with another score 11 minutes later to give the Pirates a 27-20 advantage, and they never looked back.
Five minutes after Canfield’s go-ahead touchdown, he ran another 4 yards to paydirt to send the Pirates ahead 34-20.
Both teams held a lead in the first half. A 1-yard touchdown run by Canfield and extra point by Parker Jackson made the score 7-0 with 9:11 left in the first quarter. The Tigers then went ahead 12-7, but Tioga evened the score again on a 65-yard touchdown run by Canfield with 3:05 remaining in the half.
The Pirates continue Region 6 action this Friday with a 7 p.m. game at New Town.
Eagles frustrate Jays
The fourth quarter was the difference Friday night as New Town rallied to defeat Ray 36-30.
Noah Wollschlager threw the go-ahead 70-yard touchdown pass for the Eagles, whose defense then added a safety and held on.
New Town had jumped out to a 14-0 lead before Ray scored the next 24 points.
The Jays held a 10-point lead after each of two long touchdown passes from Garrett Hodenfield to Derek Hale in the third quarter.
“It was another tough game for us,” Ray head coach Steve Perdue said. “We had several new injuries throughout the course of the game that prevented some key players from finishing the game. Our depth and lack of experienced players is evident.”
The Jays’ defense put a pair of points on the board on a safety with 1:29 left in the first quarter and followed with two touchdowns in the second quarter to grab the lead. Waylen Hale hit paydirt from 3 yards out to make it 14-10, and Hodenfield found Derek Hale for a 34-yard touchdown pass to go on top 16-14.
Ray visits also-winless Trenton on Friday.
“We need to regroup and have a great effort this coming week,” Perdue said.
