Pirates open with difficult 38-16 loss to Central McLean

By Jody Michael
The Tioga Pirates football team suffered a difficult 38-16 loss at the hands of Central McLean on Friday in the season opener for both teams.
Central McLean accumulated 289 yards in total offense, all of which were rushing yards. Tioga ended the day with 237 yards in total offense, 198 of those coming on the ground.
“We made a lot of mistakes that cost us points, but we did a lot of positives as well,” Tioga head coach Tim Schaffer said. “We were able to move the ball at times with the run game and made a few plays in the air with the passing game.”
The Pirates fell behind 8-0 in the first quarter on a 6-yard run by Central McLean running back Blake Anderson. In the first minute of the second quarter, the Cougars extended their lead to 16-0 when Anderson took off on an 89-yard scamper.
Two and a half minutes later, a 3-yard touchdown run by Zach Cottingham made it 22-0.
The Pirates excited the home crowd on its final drive of the first half when senior quarterback Austin Hove hit seniorwide receiver Parker Jackson on a 12-yard touchdown pass for their first score of the game. Senior running back Carsen Canfield ran in the two-point conversion for a 22-8 halftime score.
Central McLean responded in the third with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Trapper Jacobs to Cottingham for a 30-8 lead.
Hove and Jackson capped off a fourth-quarter drive with a 6-yard touchdown strike. Canfield ran in the conversion to put the score at 38-16.
But Cotingham completed a 41-yard touchdown run on the next drive for the final score.
Canfield was a bright spot for the Pirates, with 38 rushes for 166 yards. Hove completed 5 of 13 pass attempts for 39 yards and two touchdowns.
Anderson led Central McLean with 203 rushing yards.
“Defensively we need to tackle better and stop the run game,” Schaffer said. “We need to work on getting better at our positions, work harder and use our technique to get pads low and get into position to make plays.”
Caleb Johnson led Tioga defensively with three tackles, one tackle for loss and a fumble recovery.
Tioga returns to action Friday in Kenmare at 7 p.m.

The Ray football team dropped its season opener Friday night to Beach, 48-16.
Waylen Hale got the Jays on the board first with a 46-yard touchdown run, but the Buccaneers bounced right back with touchdown passes from Josiah Orluck.

“The game started out well, and we played pretty decent the first half,” Ray head coach Steve Perdue said. “The second half, conditioning was an issue, and we didn’t play well because of it. We found out we have a lot to work on.”
Orluck added a third touchdown pass in the third on a 47-yard connection with Avery Pinheiro, and he extended the lead to 36-16 with a 37-yard interception return for a touchdown. Beach later added two more touchdown runs.
