Pirates beat DC to end skid

By Jody Michael
The Tioga boys’ basketball team ended a stretch of 11 games in 21 days with a convincing 68-31 victory over Divide County on Friday evening. With the victory, the Pirates improved to 7-7 on the season.
The Pirates had a double-digit lead before the end of the first quarter and used a 19-0 run to close out the half leading 41-15.
“I thought our half-court trap worked really well,” Tioga head coach Justin Nelson said. “The kids executed it pretty well, and they adjusted to it, too. They made some adjustments during the game, little things that they tweaked on their own without us having to tell them.”
The second half started much like the first half ended, as Tioga increased its lead to 34 at 51-17 and closed the game with a 10-0 run for the 37-point margin.
Parker Jackson led the way for the Pirates with 22 points, five rebounds and four steals in the victory. Jacob Porras and Patrick Frise were in double-figures with 17 and 16 points, respectively, while Porras dished out a team-high six assists in the win.
As a team, Tioga shot 40 percent from the field.
Tioga falls to Powers Lake
Despite outscoring the Ranchers 18-11 in the second quarter, Tioga suffered a 66-55 loss to Powers Lake on Jan. 19 at Powers Lake.
Frise had 28 points and 13 rebounds. Roloff added a season-high eight points, and Jackson contributed seven.
Tioga ended the first half up 31-27. Powers Lake outscored the Pirates by 13 in the fourth quarter.
Kenmare dooms Tioga boys
Tioga suffered an 81-66 loss vs. Kenmare on Monday night in Tioga.
Kenmare junior Hunter Rodin scored a game-high 29 points for the Honkers, while teammate Jacob Rodin added 18 points. Kenmare shot 45 percent from the field in the win, while the Pirates shot 42 percent from the floor.
Three Pirates scored in double-figures, led by Frise, who had 19 points on 5-for-14 shooting. Marmon added 16 points, while Larson chipped in 13 points to the losing cause. Frise also had 13 boards.
The Pirates now continue a four-game road swing with a game vs. Dunseith at the Minot Auditorium on Saturday at 5:45 p.m.
