Jays split, Pirates swept in week of volleyball action

By Jody Michael
The Ray volleyball team put the brakes on a brief one-game skid Thursday night, defeating Powers Lake in a tight five set match (25-20, 25-20, 19-25, 24-26, 15-11) inside the Powers Lake School.
The Jays improved to 5-5 with the win, while the Ranchers dropped to 7-3. It was the first five-set match of the season for the Jays.
“I’m not surprised it went five, because Powers Lake has everybody back this year,” Ray coach Michelle Dolan said. “They’re always good competition.”
Two Jays finished with double-digit kills, led by junior Marissa Veach with 20. Senior Allison Ziebarth and junior Kelsey Perdue had the most digs for Ray, with 22 each. In the longest match thus far for Ray, Ziebarth dished 39 of the team’s 47 assists.
The opening set was tight early, as the teams largely traded points back and forth. Ray never trailed by more than two points but didn’t have a breathable lead of its own until two Veach kills during Maari Dolan’s second turn serving helped create a 16-13 advantage from which the Ranchers never recovered.
Powers Lake took the lead to begin the second set but never increased the margin beyond three, at 13-10. At that point, the Jays got a five-point surge behind two aces from Ziebarth and thwarted the Rancher attack to take a 2-0 match lead.
Ray was unable to complete the sweep, as Powers Lake jumped out to a 20-12 lead in the third. Down 24-14, a late spurt by the Jays added five points but ended with a Delaney Clark kill.
Closing out the win would prove tough for the Jays, as the fourth set was even tighter than the ones preceding it. Two more Veach kills helped the Jays come back from 24-20 down to tie the set, but Kylie Gunderson spiked the next point for the Ranchers, and Sadie Maruskie added one of her own to win it.
“We let up a little bit in the fourth and lost concentration,” Dolan said. “That’s all about learning to play as a unit. We came through when it counted.”
Ray was serving up 9-6 in the fifth frame when four consecutive Rancher attacks misfired, creating a 13-6 cushion leading to the 15-11 decision.
Ray drops close battle
Ray dropped a close match, falling 3-1 (16-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-19) to Des Lacs-Burlington on Sept. 15 at Ray.
Offensively, Veach collected 14 kills. Dolan and sophomore Britne Viall each added six.
Ziebarth ran the Ray offense, dishing a team-best 25 assists, while Perdue led the Jays with 17 digs.
Ray returns to action on Thursday as the Jays hosts Burke County. They take on Trenton on the road Sept. 29.
Pirates swept by Divide Co.
Tioga (1-7) fell to Divide County, 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-13), Sept. 15 at Divide County High School.
Tayla Dean led the Pirates with four kills, while Nicole Postovit finished with eight assists.
Tioga returns to action at Kenmare on Thursday and hosts Powers Lake on Tuesday.
Grubb gets 1,000th dig
Powers Lake recognized senior libero Kinzi Grubb during a match Sept. 8 for recording her 1,000th career dig earlier in the season.
Grubb has also received the distinction of all-district each of the past two seasons and was on the district and region all-tournament teams last year.
