Jays roll past Tioga, 58-22

By Jody Michael
The Ray girls’ basketball team bounced back from a season-opening loss to roll past Tioga 58-22 on Friday evening at Ray High School.
Marissa Veach led all scorers with 14 points. Maari Dolan and Courtney Townsend each added seven points. Kelsey Perdue chipped in six points.
“I’m happy,” head coach Matt Ray said. “We were composed, and we ran the stuff we needed to run.”
Ray (1-1) controlled the first half from the opening tip and never trailed. The Pirates (0-2) hung around at first, trailing just 9-6 five minutes in, but Ray held a 17-9 advantage at the end of the first. The second frame proved to be more one-sided, as Ray outscored Tioga 14-1 to take the 31-10 lead into the break.
In the third quarter the Jays were able to open it up even more, scoring seven unanswered points to open the frame. Ray ultimately outscored Tioga 13-5 in the third to go on top 44-15 heading into the final eight minutes. Ray continued increasing its lead in the fourth quarter for the 36-point win.
Ray connected on 36 percent from the field; the Pirates shot 22 percent from the field.
Jayden Hodges and Nicole Postovit each had seven points to lead the Pirates.
“We were outworked, outplayed, outboarded, out-everything -- that’s about all I can say,” Tioga head coach Trent Roemmich said. “Something’s got to change.”
Ray loses opener
Maari Dolan scored a game-high 19 points and Marissa Veach added 17 points, but the Jays fell to the New Town Eagles, 73-50, Dec. 1 from New Town.
Caitlyn Tveter notched 15 points for the Eagles. New Town was only up 27-24 at the halftime break but took a 49-32 lead into the fourth quarter.

Tioga lost 54-23 at home vs. Towner-Granville-Upham on Dec. 1.
TGU jumped out to a big first-half lead and cruised to the victory. The Titans led 30-12 at halftime.
Jayden Hodges and Leah Schmidt led the Pirates with six points each. Tayla Dean chipped in with five points. Angie Anderson led all players with 23 points.
The Pirates and Jays return to action Thursday for the second round of the Tioga High School tip-off tournament.
