Jays, Pirates close tourney with wins

By Jody Michael
The Ray girls’ basketball team wrapped up Tioga tip-off tournament play with a 58-49 victory over Powers Lake in the fifth-place game.
The Jays (3-2) shot 48 percent (27 of 56) from the field.
Junior Marissa Veach led the Jays with 30 points (14 of 19 from the field). Fellow junior Maari Dolan contributed a 12-point effort on 5-of-11 shooting.
“Maari came in in the second half and scored some big ones for us,” head coach Matt Ray said. “That put a lot of pressure off of Marissa. I think that’s what turned the game around for us.”
Ray broke an 8-8 deadlock with a 14-4 run to jump in front 22-12 early in the second quarter, but the Jays went cold for the remainder of the half. Powers Lake used a 6-0 run to pull within four at the break.
The Jays scored the first six points of the second half and built a 14-point lead (53-39) with 3:34 remaining. The Ranchers rallied but got no closer than six points behind in the final minute.
“I’m happy with where we’re at,” Ray said after the win. “I know Christmas break’s coming; I hope the girls commit themselves through that, and we’ll be a lot better after break.”
Ray gave Divide County a battle in the first round Dec. 8, but the Maroons pulled away with a 39-33 decision against the Jays.
Veach finished as Ray’s only double-digit scorer, with 13 points.
Divide County outscored Ray 14-1 in the second period and took a 21-11 lead into halftime.
Led by a combined 39 points from Veach (28) and Dolan (11), Ray recovered in the consolation semifinal with a dominant 67-43 win over Tioga on Thursday.
Ray will return to action Saturday, hosting Powers Lake in a 3 p.m. game.
Tioga snaps losing streak
Nicole Postovit scored 15 points to lead a balanced offense as Tioga snapped a 36-game losing streak with a 53-23 win over Nedrose in Saturday’s seventh-place game.
Tayla Dean and Leah Schmidt both scored 12, and Jayden Hodges added six for Tioga (1-4). It was the first win for the Pirates since topping Powers Lake on Jan. 21, 2014.
“The girls played hard and worked hard for it and finally got one,” head coach Trent Roemmich said. “They were excited about that. We want to try to continue to do that, and not just on a one-day basis.”
Tioga led 24-12 at half and stretched the advantage to 47-15 with 5:01 left before a slight Nedrose rally.
“In the second half we moved the ball a lot better,” Roemmich said. “I told them, ‘You might have a good look, but a teammate’s probably two passes away with a wide-open look.’ I think we kind of showed that in the second half and made the extra pass.”
Tioga’s tournament opener was a 52-43 loss to Burke County. Schmidt and Dean were the two Pirates in double figures, with 11 and 10, respectively. Skabo finished with eight points.
Postovit scored 16 points in Thursday’s loss to Ray, while Dean finished with 13 points.
The Pirates will return to action on Thursday with a 7:15 p.m. home contest vs. Trenton-Trinity Christian, and Friday at Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood.
