Jays advance to semis, Pirates fall to Ranchers

By Jody Michael
The Ray volleyball team wasted little time Monday in a sweep of Burke County in the District 16 tournament quarterfinals at Tioga High School, 25-12, 25-8, 25-9.
Marissa Veach dominated the first set for the Jays with seven kills. In the second set, with Ray leading 7-4, Veach stepped up to serve and guided the Jays on an 14-0 run with five service aces to put them up comfortably at 21-4. A few points later, Britne Viall finished the set off with a service ace of her own to put the Jays up 2-0 in the match.
Looking to close out the match out in three, the Jays went on an 5-0 run to take a 12-4 lead in the third. That lead continued to extend as the Titans scored only one point on serve in the entire set.
The sweep of the Titans was the Jays’ 16th straight-set win this season, and the fourth consecutive.
Ray spread the kills around Monday, as eight players had at least one: Veach, Viall, Maari Dolan, Kinley Bergstrom, Abigail Hickel, Kelsey Perdue, Savannah Boone and Madison Daniel.
Full player stats from the tournament were not reported.
Ray had a quick turnaround for the semifinals, as the Jays took on Powers Lake on Tuesday night after press time.
Tioga falls to Powers Lake
The Tioga volleyball team had its 2016 season on the line Tuesday following a 3-0 defeat against Powers Lake in the quarterfinals Monday.
The Ranchers won by scores of 25-14, 25-5 and 25-9 to advance to Tuesday’s semifinals. The outcome dropped Tioga into Tuesday’s loser-out match against Burke County.
A seesaw first set saw Tioga stay within two points until a 6-0 run by Powers Lake proved costly in creating an 11-4 margin. Tioga ultimately scored just two points on serve.
The Ranchers immediately broke open the second set with a 12-0 run and jumped out to an 11-3 advantage in the third set, but the Pirates answered on a 4-0 run to get within 11-7. The teams traded points to get to 13-9 before the Ranchers notched 12 consecutive points to take the set and the match.
Stanley defeats Divide County
Stanley swept Divide County 25-14, 25-14, 26-24 in Monday’s other quarterfinal match. The Blue Jays play top-seed Kenmare in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Each of the first two sets had a few ties and lead changes before Stanley pulled away by more than quadrupling the Maroons in kills.
Stanley went ahead 18-13 in the third set but then misfired on a handful of attacks to help pull Divide County even at 19-19, 23-23 and 24-24, but Stanley notched two last kills to win and advance.
Ray crushes Trinity, Parshall
Ray dominated in a three-set sweep of Trinity Christian (25-2, 25-9, 25-14) Thursday at Ray.
Veach posted 16 kills, five digs and two blocks, while Dolan notched eight kills, 11 digs and six aces. Hickel finished with six kills and five digs. Perdue finished with 32 assists, four digs, a kill and an ace.
Veach also highlighted a dominant effort Oct. 25 with 14 kills and two blocks as Ray swept at Parshall, 25-8, 25-5, 25-8. Dolan dug a team-high nine balls, and Boone served 11 aces.
Tough Tioga loss
The Pirates were held off by Trinity Christian in five sets Oct. 24 in Williston.
Trinity Christian won the first set 25-16 before Tioga secured 25-19 and 25-16 wins in the second and third sets. Trinity took the fourth set, 25-11, and the match with a 15-13 fifth set.
