Junior Devon Wilharm rushed for one touchdown and returned a kickoff for another, but it wasn’t enough for Tioga to match Kenmare-Burke County, as the Honkers defeated the Pirates 44-21 at Tioga High School on Saturday evening.
Tioga senior quarterback Cole Marmon finished 7 of 15 for 72 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Kenmare was led by senior quarterback Kyler Melby, who completed 16 of 26 passes for 223 yards and two scores and ran for three more.
“That quarterback’s pretty athletic, and they’re quicker,” Tioga coach Tim Schaffer said. “They’ve got a lot of speed.”
The Honkers answered a 7-0 deficit with three touchdowns in the second quarter, then scored on two of their first four possessions of the second half to take a commanding 36-7 lead.
Tioga got on the board on the first drive of the game courtesy of a 10-yard scoring strike from Marmon to Jacob Porras that completed a seven-play, 48-yard drive. Kenmare struck back on a 2-yard touchdown run by Melby. The Honkers followed with a 70-yard touchdown return of a Marmon fumble.
Melby hit Kolton Jesz for a 14-yard play to the end zone to make the score 22-7 with 36 seconds to play in the half.
Kenmare made it 30-7 thanks to a short field set up by a turnover on downs at the Pirate 47-yard line and a Tioga holding penalty. The third play of the drive was a 10-yard Melby TD run.
The Pirates fumbled on their own 11-yard line two possessions later. Kenmare countered with a touchdown pass from Melby to Ty Jesz to make the score 36-7.
But the Pirates would not quit. Wilharm scored his first TD of the game with a kickoff return of 72 yards. The Honkers then turned the ball over on downs on the Tioga 33-yard line. Twelve plays later, Wilharm scored his second TD from three yards out and cut the Honker lead to 36-21.
“The last quarter we played well, but we’ve got to play four quarters,” Schaffer said. “It took us a while to get warmed up.”
But Kenmare struck back after both teams traded interceptions, with Melby hitting Kolton Jesz on third-and-10 for a 31-yard gain. Four plays later, Melby ran for a 10-yard score to push Kenmare’s cushion back to three touchdowns.
The Pirates’ next test will be at Trenton in a Friday night game vs. the Tigers.
