Canfield leads Tioga past Ray 42-30 on homecoming

By Jody Michael
Tioga senior Carsen Canfield ran for six touchdowns, and the Pirates held onto the “Battle of the Firestorm” trophy with a 42-30 victory over visiting Ray on Friday night.
Canfield carried the ball 32 times for 473 yards, and Tioga (3-2, 3-1) amassed 282 yards in the first half to lead 28-6.
“We came out and played a really good first half,” Tioga head coach Schaffer said. “But I told them, ‘We’re going to have to come out and play a great second half.’”
Turnovers hurt Ray in the first half, none more than the interception quarterback Garrett Hodenfield threw just shy of the end zone. A score would have given Ray the lead in the first quarter. The Jays also had an interception and a fumble in the second quarter.
Tioga was nearly as bad in the second half, allowing a safety on a punt return and losing fumbles on Ray’s 1- and 27-yard lines, while Hodenfield directed three touchdown drives to get the Jays within 12 points.
“The mistakes we made in the second half cost us some points,” Schaffer said. “We could have really taken them out of the game.”
The Jays (0-5, 0-4 Region 6) fell to 0-2 against Tioga since their co-op dissolved and have lost 10 straight games.
“I was proud of them for coming back from a poor showing in Trenton and having a chance here,” Ray head coach Steve Perdue said. “I’m pleased with the effort.”
Canfield scored on a 56-yard run for the first Tioga touchdown, and Ray got on the board with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Hodenfield to sophomore Derek Hale with 7:15 to go in the first.
But the Pirates pulled away with three scores in the second quarter. Canfield scored on runs of 77, 47 and 27 yards.
“That’s been our Achilles’ heel since day one,” Perdue said of his defense. “When you’re challenged with numbers, you don’t always have the right guy playing the right position, and I think that’s part of it.”
The Pirates are at home Friday against Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood, a team currently undefeated in Region 6 play.
“They’re No. 1 in our region,” Schaffer said. “We’re really going to have to pick up our physicality and play a little bit better.”
The Jays are at home against the Divide County Maroons, who scored 73 points last week against New Town.
“I understand they’ve got a quarterback that’s out of this world,” Perdue said. “We’re going to have to try to keep him contained and not let him run around.”
