Tioga’s Dollars for Scholars chapter has planned a new event that it hopes will become an annual fundraising staple.
A spaghetti dinner and silent auction will take place Tuesday next week, March 22, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.
Admission to the dinner is a free-will offering, with proceeds going toward scholarships. Silent auction bidding will end at 7 p.m.
Since 1992, the chapter has raised money to help defray the costs of higher education for Tioga High School graduates.
“We award scholarships to both seniors and alumni,” current chapter president Nancy Larson said.
“We do get a lot more alumni that will apply after a year when they’ve experienced just how much things can cost.”
Larson said the board recently decided to foray into auctions after sensing a need for new avenues of fundraising.
“A lot of how we fundraise has been doing concessions for volleyball and girls’ basketball,” Larson said. “We’re trying to move away from that. We don’t have the number of volunteers and board members we need anymore.”
Staffing the concession stand for every home game, Larson said, has become more difficult.
“It’s a huge time commitment,” she said. “People are busy.”
A call for auction items received a response from “a lot of local businesses,” Larson said.
Gift certificates for Chellsie Weisz Photography, Farmer’s Daughter, The Jungle, Weisz Country Greenhouse, Lil’s Diner, Cash Wise Foods, The Rig Grill and Shopko are among the offerings.
NCC donated an iPad Mini, Pinnacle is offering a satellite radio system and Hess has made some of its popular toy trucks available.
Shear Image and Eden’s Edge have both contributed an array of beauty and hair products, while both Anytime Fitness and Kick N Fit Gym are offering three months of membership.
Some getaway offers are available as well, including Medora Musical tickets as well as a Four Bears Casino hotel, dinner and slots package for two worth $275.
