The closure of a Mount Pleasant, Wis., wholesaler is having a ripple effect across small towns all over the upper midwest, including stores in Crosby, Tioga and Stanley.
For decades, small town pharmacy and variety stores depended on Promotions Unlimited for sale flyers and variety merchandise, from giftware to soap, at a reasonable cost.
The connection gave small, independently owned stores some purchasing clout.
“We could compete with the big box stores with those sales,” said Tim Joyce, who owns Tioga Drug. “It really kept us on the same field with the Shopkos and the Pamidas.”
