Paint the town red, white and blue -- Tioga’s annual Independence Day celebrations start Friday, July 3.
Event organizers are scrambling to make final preparations for the event-packed weekend, which includes a number of new attractions mixed in with old favorites.
“I hope everybody will come and have a good time,” said Freedom Festival organizer Judy Odegaard.
New this year is the official grand opening of the town pool at noon on Friday. After a ribbon cutting ceremony, swimmers will be treated to games, bellyflop contests and an afternoon of free swimming from noon to 5 p.m.
Police K9 Lita will join Bave this year in an exhibition of agility and apprehension on Friday at 5 p.m. at the Farm Festival Grounds. The Fire Department will also give an extrication demonstration.
Live entertainment includes a street dance at the Farm Festival Grounds by SLAMABAMA on Friday night and concerts under the tent by Guy and A Girl on Saturday afternoon and night.
Fireworks will light the skies over the Tioga Dam at dusk on Saturday.
For those looking for more active forms of 4th of July revelry, team spots are still open in the softball, frisbee golf and 4-person scramble golf tournaments on Saturday and Sunday.
And if it rains?
“We’ll have a rock-paper-scissors contest,” joked softball tourney organizer Patrick Alberts.
Less rigorous entertainment will be ongoing throughout the weekend. Celebrants can peruse antiques and collectibles at the flea market on Friday and Saturday, decorate houses and lawns before the parade on Saturday morning or honor Tioga’s veterans on Saturday.
