Tiogans spent a night in the cold last week after the main gas line into the town was shut-off due to a “failure” in a backup system.
Over 900 meters had to be manually shut off by Montana-Dakota Utilities (MDU) Tuesday last week so the system could be purged and restarted.
MDU crews then had to go door-to-door in the middle of the night to re-light pilot lights on furnaces and other natural gas-powered appliances.
“At about 2 p.m., there was a failure somewhere in the backup system,” said Tony Spilde with WBI, the supplier for MDU. “Our immediate focus was to stop the work and reconnect to the main fuel source so MDU could get the town back online.”
