Cash Wise Foods, owned by Minnesota based Coborn’s Inc., has filed for tax abatements for all 10 of its North Dakota locations, including Tioga.
Tax abatements allow companies and individual property owners to appeal their property tax assessments after the county, or other local governing body, sets the rates for that year.
According to paperwork obtained by the Tribune from Williams County, Coborn’s filed paperwork in October requesting their property assessment in Tioga be more than halved from just over $4.3 million to $2.1 million.
Separate paperwork must be filed in the abatement process for each county for the individual locations.
No justification for the change was stated on the paperwork, other than a statement saying “the original county value be reduced in accordance with state law” without stating which laws were in question.
