Volleyball is 6th in Watford

The Divide County volleyball team won three of six matches Saturday in a Watford City tournament to finish sixth out of 13 teams.
The Maroons lost 25-12, 25-7 to the Bismarck Century JV in their first match but advanced out of pool play with wins of 25-15, 25-11 over Trenton and 26-24, 25-21 over New town.
In the quarterfinals, the Maroons fell 25-16, 25-15 but recovered to win 25-17, 13-25, 15-14 over Bowman County in a consolation round. DC rallied from down 14-10 in the final set.
“This game was a nail-biter,” DC head coach Brittany Harward said. “The momentum kept building as our team continued to rally, point after point. This was a good team to go up against, and we ended up beating them.”
The team ended with a 25-10, 25-10 loss to the Bismarck High School sophomores in the fifth-place match.
Statistical leaders for Divide County included Katelynn Power-Akers, with 59 digs and 30 assists, and Lauryn Heide, with 20 kills and 11 blocks. Heide and Ashlyn Bailey each served up five aces.
“There were numerous bright spots throughout the tournament,” Harward said. “The team would gel together and move as one, shifting to the right spots and taking care of business. It was neat to watch the cohesion.”
Maroons fall in sweep to Ray
DC fell to the Ray Jays in three sets Thursday, 25-8, 25-18, 25-13.
Heide led all players in earning three kills, followed by Kate Sabe, who had two kills and an ace. Power-Akers led the setters with three assists, and McKenzie Hallgren finished with 20 digs.
Marissa Veach led the Jays with 14 kills, while Kelsey Perdue had 25 assists and Maari Dolan and Savannah Boone each had 20 digs. Veach finished with seven blocks, as Ray earned a total of nine to DC’s zero.
Ray was hot out of the gate, while DC failed to record a single kill in the first set. The Jays started with an 8-0 run and held the Maroons to just one serve point.
“We shot ourselves in the foot, basically,” Harward said. “We are improving as a team, which is good. We’re talking more. We’ve just got to keep working.”
The Maroons showed more fight in the second set. Trailing 6-3, a six-point swing by DC gave the home side a 9-7 advantage, forcing Ray into its first timeout of the match. The pendulum immediately swung the other way, as the Jays came back with a six-point run of their own.
“We just let them come back in,” Harward said. “We’ve just got to be persistent and not let down.”
An attack error stopped the run, but DC didn’t win another point on serve until it was 20-15 and never mounted a comeback.
The final set started similarly close, featuring six ties within the first 16 points of the set. Ray then went on a 12-0 run to go up 20-8 and held off the Maroons from there.
DC tops Trinity Christian
The Maroons captured their first home-court win on Sept. 6, 3-2 over Trinity Christian.
Power-Akers earned a double-double with 49 assists and 31 digs, as did Bailey with 27 digs and 12 assists.
Heide was one kill shy of a double-double, tallying 10 blocks, while MaKenzie Knudson tabbed 12 blocks. Hallgren maintained the defensive line for the Maroons, digging up 31 of Trinity Christian’s attacks.
Trinity Christian’s Madi Schell paced her team’s offense with nine kills, as well as Ashton Pierce and Chloe Schell, each posting six kills. Chloe Schell recorded 19 assists on the match, and Madi Schell earned 38 digs against the Maroons.
DC travels this week, to Tioga on Tuesday and Kenmare on Thursday. The Maroons will host Burke County on Sept. 20.
