Volleyball has big week

By Jody Michael
The Divide County volleyball team reached the semifinals of an invitational tournament in Washburn on Saturday.
The Maroons finished second in pool play, behind eventual champion Harvey-Wells County and ahead of Nedrose and the host school.
In tournament play, DC defeated Drake-Anamoose before bowing out against Harvey.
Full stats were not reported before press time.
Divide sweeps Burke 3-0
Divide County dominated Burke County in Lignite on Thursday night en route to a three-set sweep, 25-13, 25-15, 25-23.
“They did better than the last time we played against Burke,” Maroons head coach Brittany Harward said. “They were actually shifting this time, staying on their feet instead of staying in one spot, and were communicating as a team.”
MaKenzie Knudson was a leader for Divide County with five kills, while adding a block. Kate Sabe picked up three kills.
Katelynn Power-Akers led the Maroons with five key aces.
“We worked on our serves a little bit more,” Harward said. “They were doing things a lot better this time.”
A strong serving output by Ashlyn Bailey and two points by Sabe put the Maroons ahead 8-2 to open the match, and Divide County continued the strong output into the second set.
Power-Akers collected two service aces late in the first set and added two more early in the second amid multiple Titan attack erors for an 8-0 lead.
The momentum stayed with the Maroons until late in the second, when Burke fought off five consecutive set points before a Sabe kill put the set away.
Burke County benefited from multiple DC service errors and three kills by Sara Nelson to gain a 12-7 lead in the third set. The Maroons refused to roll over, though, and Knudson and Lauryn Heide each scored on a block of Nelson during a run in which DC went up 17-15.
Knudson then had kills on three consecutive side-outs and added an ace for good measure in getting the score to 24-21. An Ally Grote attack error and Haley Beeter kill put Burke within one, but Nelson misfired on the next rally to seal the sweep.
This week’s matches are Tuesday in Ray, Thursday at home vs. Tioga and Saturday at the Northwest Conference tournament in Glenburn. DC hosts Trenton on Tuesday next week.
