McCoy, Heide torch Ranchers

By Jody Michael
Thanks to another big game from both Alli McCoy and Lauryn Heide, the Divide County girls’ basketball team beat Powers Lake at Haggin Court on Saturday evening, 52-44.
Heide tied her season-best in points against the Ranchers (8-7, 8-4 District 16), with 18, and McCoy matched her, helping the Maroons (7-9, 5-5) to a second consecutive victory.
“I thought we played very, very, very well as a unit,” Divide County head coach Kent Harding said. “Shared the ball well, defended well, lot of rebounds -- so, things that we wanted to do, you know, we did for the most part.”
McCoy took control in the second half, hitting a key layup while drawing a foul and making the free throw to turn a three-point Divide County lead into six points with 34 seconds left. She closed the game with 15 points in the final 16 minutes, hitting four of her five shots and going 7 of 7 from the foul line.
The Ranchers had whittled the Maroons’ advantage to one on Sydney Titus’ 3-point play with 4:16 left in the game, but the Maroons scored 11 of the final 15 points of the game to win going away.
“We want to take a lot of time off the clock and try to get something easy off it, and then just play good defense,” Harding said.
Divide County, which shot 36 percent for the game, found its stroke at the outset, with six field goals in the first quarter. The Maroons went on a 12-3 run in the third quarter after Powers Lake had gained a four-point lead.
“We just needed to stop some runs of teams and not get down six, eight, 10,” Harding said. “Tonight, we did that. When they made runs, we stopped the run, and then we were able to stay on track.”
Tuesday’s game at Burke County was after press time. The Maroons close their regular-season schedule at home, Thursday at 7:15 p.m. vs. Kenmare and Saturday at 4:30 p.m. vs. Trenton-Trinity Christian.
