Maroons fall to Stanley in district quarters, 3-0

By Jody Michael
Despite putting up a strong battle at times, the Divide County volleyball team couldn’t string together consistent spans of good play as the Maroons fell to Stanley 25-14, 25-22, 25-8 in a District 16 tournament quarterfinal match in Ray.
Alli McCoy and Kasha Bakewell led Divide County with five kills each, and Sierra Grote had seven assists. Lacey Meiers led Stanley with nine kills.
“Stanley played a way better game than we did,” Divide County head coach Lisa Ford said. “It all goes back to fundamentals, and in the first game, our servicing was way off. A team that has really great hitters like they do, we can’t just give them a lollipop over the net and a free ball.”
The second set proved most competitive, with Divide County taking a 21-20 lead late in the set thanks to back-to-back attack errors by the Blue Jays. Stanley scored the next four to take a 24-21 lead, and after a kill by Emilee Johnson, Abby Iverson put the set away with a kill of her own, and Stanley won 25-22.
“We come together and play hard, and we’re right there with them,” Ford said. “It’s just when we get in those little funks we can’t get out of, it makes it really hard to come back then.”
Divide County’s season is on the line Thursday at 6 p.m. in Ray in a region qualifier match against either Powers Lake or Kenmare.
Maroons fall to Tigers
Divide County pushed Trenton to a five-set battle on Oct. 27 at home. DC claimed the first and third set, but the Tigers slid by with a two-point victory in the fifth to claim the match. The set scores were 23-25, 25-18, 10-25, 25-17 and 15-13.
McCoy recorded a team-high of 14 kills and added eight blocks, while Bakewell entered nine kills and eight blocks of her own. Hallgren owned the defense with a match-high of 27 digs.
