Maroons fall in playoff

By Jody Michael
Two Mott-Regent players scored three touchdowns each, and the Wildfire defeated Divide County 46-8 in the second round of the state nine-man football playoffs Saturday.
Mott-Regent (7-2) was efficient in building a 38-0 halftime lead, including touchdown runs of 73 and 57 yards by Wegh, who also started his outing with a touchdown throw -- a 52-yarder to Brent Messmer. Joshua Wallace added three touchdown runs and four conversion runs.
“We ran into a good team on Saturday and couldn’t match up with them,” Divide County defensive coach Nate Nelson said. “They had more speed and were more physical than us.”
DC quarterback Aidan Eriksmoen rushed for 111 yards; Taylor Landsverk ran for 52.
Trailing 38-0, Divide County (5-4) had nearly grabbed a bit of momentum before halftime when Eriksmoen and Landsverk began a drive with respective runs of 48 and 21 yards to reach the Mott 7. But the offense failed to advance any further.
The Maroons didn’t score until late in the fourth quarter.
Landsverk and Eriksmoen had back-to-back carries of 16 and 22 yards to set up their lone points, an Eriksmoen 1-yard TD and Landsverk conversion. A fumble recovery by Jaden Feil had given DC possession just shy of midfield.
Mott-Regent had a clear size advantage against the Maroons, whose starting lineup featured more sophomores than it had upperclassmen.
“We baptized a lot of younger players by fire this year, and they took some lumps against the better teams,” Nelson said.
