Maroons drop region qualifier to Ranchers

By Jody Michael
Divide County fell to Powers Lake in a District 16 tournament match on Thursday evening, dropping a 3-0 (25-8, 25-21, 25-12) decision at Ray High School. The Maroons conclude the season with a record of 15-17.
Alli McCoy led the Maroons with seven kills, with Kasha Bakewell not far behind with six. Setter Sierra Grote posted 10 assists. Defensively, DC recorded three blocks.
“They’ve grown tremendously,” Divide County head coach Lisa Ford said in reflecting on the season. “They were kind of a young team, just for the mere fact that a lot of them didn’t get a lot of playing time last year.”
Powers Lake wasted no time in set one, jumping out to a 7-0 advantage behind two service aces from Sadie Maruskie and two kills from Kylie Gunderson. DC hung around through the middle portion of the frame, but the Ranchers capitalized on several aces to ride to a 25-8 win.
The serving game would continue to provide a spark for Powers Lake throughout the match, ultimately ending the night with 14 total aces.
Divide County gained the upper hand in the second set despite just one 3-0 mini-spurt. McCoy and Bakewell each got in a couple of kills to give DC a 16-11 advantage.
Still, the favored Ranchers answered with a 6-0 run to reclaim the lead at 17-16. Another kill from McCoy equalized the score again, but the Ranchers scored seven of the next 10 points to push the set to the edge. Bakewell delivered a kill on Powers Lake’s first set point before a DC service error closed things out for the Ranchers, 25-21.
“I’m really glad that we fought so hard that game,” Ford said.
In the third set, Powers Lake used a 9-0 rally to pull ahead 19-7. DC drew itself to within nine after two Rancher attack errors and an Emilee Johnson ace, but it was as close as the Maroons would come, with the Ranchers clinching the match, 25-12.
Burke County lost to Stanley in the other region qualifier, 25-11, 25-17, 25-20. Ray defeated Kenmare for the district tournament title, 25-20, 25-18, 24-26, 25-18.
