Maroon girls clinch No. 4 seed

By Jody Michael
The District 16 girls’ basketball tournament begins Thursday, as Divide County meets Ray at Kenmare High School in a quarterfinal contest. DC is scheduled to play the No. 5 Jays at 4 p.m.
The winner of the DC-Ray contest will advance to Friday’s semifinal round to face Stanley, while the loser plays Saturday.
Maroons drop senior night
The Trenton-Trinity Christian Tigers improved to 17-2 after a 58-39 decision Saturday at Haggin Court.
Guiding all Maroons, Alli McCoy finished the evening with a team-high 14 points on 5-of-15 shooting from the floor. Lauryn Heide added 10 points.
Heide scored the first points of the game, and by the end of the first quarter, DC posted a four-point lead, 14-10.
The Tigers held DC scoreless for a nearly three-minute stretch in the second quarter as the Maroons trailed 28-24 at the break.
Divide County’s thorn in the opening half was Madysen Houle, who notched 11 points by herself and finished with 19.
In the third quarter, Heide and McKenzie Hallgren cut D’s deficit to 29-28 with a basket each, and that was as close as the Maroons pulled within.
“We just seemed tired at halftime,” Divide County head coach Kent Harding said. “In the second half, we got flat, and I’m not sure why.”
DC knocks off Kenmare
Divide County topped Kenmare on Thursday night by a 41-40 count.
The Maroons led by seven points, 15-8, at the end of the first period and held a 34-24 advantage entering the final eight minutes, but Kenmare made it a single-digit game in the fourth quarter.
Heide finished with a team-high 17 points, while McCoy contributed 15 points.
Sierra Overton tallied a game-high 18 points to pace the Honkers.
Stats from the Maroons’ 67-30 win over Burke County on Feb. 2 were not reported.
