Maroon boys too sluggish in 74-43 loss to Powers Lake

By Jody Michael
The Divide County boys’ basketball team couldn’t overcome a slow start in falling to Powers Lake 74-43 at Haggin Court on Friday.
“We knew their quickness was going to be tough to defend, and it was,” head coach Rodney Johnson said. “They got layups because they’re just quicker than us, and we didn’t play our right defense. That’s what lost us the game.”
DC (0-1) shot just 29 percent in the game, while the Ranchers connected on 47 percent of their attempts.
“If we could get it to our big men, which we already knew, we’d look all right,” Johnson said, “but we settled for too many outside shots. They took a lot better shots than we did; that was the difference.”
Keaton Oien got the Maroons on the board two minutes in, but the Ranchers went on a 23-2 run to over the next 7:30 to build a 19-point cushion.
Tyler Deering, Ryder Beauclair and Jacob Bird brought DC to within 23-10 on consecutive baskets, then to 25-14, before Powers Lake pushed the advantage back to 35-15 at the break.
Powers Lake opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run to extend its lead to 30 two and a half minutes into the period.
The Ranchers built their largest lead of the game at 61-25 in the first minute of the fourth quarter on one of Klitzke’s two 3-pointers.
The Maroons outscored the Ranchers by five the rest of the way to cut the lead to 31.
Bird led DC with 15 points, while Beauclair and Oien each added seven.
The Maroons are taking part in the Stanley Lions tournament this week, which concludes Thursday and Friday. The next home game is Dec. 22 at 7:15 p.m. against Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood.
