Junior Gold opens with loss ahead of Hockey Day

By Jody Michael
The Estevan Bears coasted to a 9-3 win against Crosby’s Junior Gold hockey team at Andrist Arena in the Comets’ season opener on Sunday.
“I thought we played a pretty decent game to start the year off,” Crosby coach Cody Overland said. “We have a lot of work to do.”
Aidan Eriksmoen had a goal and two assists, Alex Bailey had one of each and Rhys Johnson also scored for Crosby. Joran Oien made 32 saves.
Estevan led 5-0 in the first period. The Comets drew within 5-1 at 19:17 of the first when Eriksmoen took advantage of a breakaway from the face-off.
Estevan’s lead grew to seven early in the third.
Johnson made it 8-2 at 11:02 of the third, following the rebound of an Estevan goalie’s save for a one-timer.
Bailey scored three and a half minutes later when Eriksmoen found him open at the right side of the net.
Hockey Day is Saturday
From the Termites to the high schoolers, Crosby will celebrate a new hockey season Saturday when Andrist Arena hosts the fourth annual Hockey Day in Crosby.
The day-long affair has packed the Crosby Community Center each year of its existence, and this year’s event once again includes eight hockey games, a raffle table and silent and live auctions.
The day begins early with a scrimmage between Termite team members at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mite contest vs. Radville beginning at 10:30. At noon, it’s the defending league champion Squirts vs. Watford City.
At 1:30 p.m., the Peewees take the ice to battle against Carnduff. The 14U girls take over at 3 p.m. vs. Watford City.
The Bantams will be playing Radville at 4:30 p.m., followed by a girls’ 19U contest vs. alumni players scheduled for 6 p.m.
At 7:30 p.m. is the live auction, and at 8 p.m. the Junior Gold boys close out the night vs. Weyburn.
The raffles and silent auction will take place throughout the day, and the kitchen will have its full menu available as well.
Live auction items include season-long rink burger vouchers, a Crosby Cup game package, reserved parking spots at the community center and autographed memorabilia from Muhammad Ali, Sidney Crosby, the Miracle on Ice and University of North Dakota hockey players.
Other memorabilia, gift baskets and more are expected to fill the silent auction tables.
The auctions are a Blue Line Club fundraiser.
