The Divide County girls’ track and field team has qualified for four events in Friday and Saturday’s NDHSAA Class B Track and Field State Meet at the Bismarck Community Bowl.
Senior Emilee Johnson joined sophomore Alli McCoy as an individual qualifier. Johnson qualified in the girls’ long jump with a personal-best mark of 15-10.5 at the region meet Saturday in Minot, one of several personal records by the Maroons on the day.
“We had a good showing at the regional meet,” Divide County head coach Nate Nelson said. “The wind was howling out of the southeast, so it made some events very daunting.”
Also qualifying for the second consecutive year was the girls’ 4x100 relay team, as McCoy, Johnson, sophomore McKenzie Hallgren and freshman Lauryn Heide’s time of 54.62 seconds on Saturday earned them a ticket to Bismarck.
“Our 4x100 relay team qualifying by placing third was the most exciting aspect of the day,” Nelson said. “We edged out DLB by just .01 of a second.”
The same foursome missed qualifying in the 4x200 by less than two seconds in finishing fifth.
McCoy, after already surpassing state qualifying standards in the girls’ 100- and 200-meter dash, won the 100 region title in 12.80 seconds and was runner-up in the 200 in 26.59, both of which were her best times of the season.
“Alli looked strong in the sprints and will have a good chance to make the finals in both the 100 and 200 at the state meet,” Nelson said.
Junior Kate Sabe fell short of qualifying but claimed fifth in the shot put and improved her discus throw to 75-11 in finishing 11th.
Johnson was sixth in the 200, and Hallgren and Heide both scored in the triple jump.
On the boys’ side, senior Ryder Beauclair finished his high school track and field career with a fifth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles in a personal-best 46.36 seconds.
Beauclair also took eighth in the long jump, while freshman Dejuan Jenkins was sixth.
Fellow senior Tyler Harward had a career-best mark of his own in the boys’ discus throw; his toss of 79-10 placed him 22nd.
“We had a good year with all the kids, and everyone improved in their events and got faster and stronger,” Nelson said.
McCoy was DC’s lone event winner at the Last Chance Meet in Velva on May 16, with a time of 26.68 in the 200.
