Girls drop Tioga tourney title to Trenton, 71-30

By Jody Michael
The Divide County girls’ basketball team lost to Trenton-Trinity Christian by a score of 71-30 on Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the Tioga tip-off tournament. Sophomore Alli McCoy had 13 points for the Maroons in the loss.
Freshman Lauryn Heide finished with 11 points, junior Kate Sabe and sophomore McKenzie Hallgren respectively had four and two points.
Senior Madysen Houle finished with 33 points for Trenton, and fellow senior Maycie Brunelle finished with 17 points. Eighth-grader Kaity Hove also finished in double figures, with 11 points.
“They have a very nice combination,” DC head coach Kent Harding said of Trenton. “They have guards that can penetrate, they have guards that can shoot from the perimeter and then they have a big girl inside. You’ve got to stop five players, so it’s a tough matchup.”
Divide County fell to 3-1 on the season; Trenton improved to 5-0.
“We are proud of our first three wins of the year,” Harding said. “Starting 3-0 on the season was a huge boost for us, but I think today we kind of see, OK, we can be proud of that, happy with that, but we’ve got to keep getting better.”
DC trailed 15-0 after the game’s first 4:06. Shots by McCoy and Sabe on back-to-back possessions pulled DC within 11 at 21-10 with six seconds to go in the opening period before a Houle basket just before the buzzer.
A 16-8 run by the Tigers in the second quarter increased the Trenton lead to 39-18, and the Maroons would get no closer.
Girls stretch winning streak
Divide County had stretched its winning streak to three with a 56-39 win over Burke County in semifinal action Thursday night.
McCoy paced DC with 22 points, while Heide had 18 points. Hallgren had eight points.
DC took a 30-14 lead into halftime. Heide had 10 first-half points, while McCoy and Hallgren each had eight.
McCoy leads DC to 39-33 win
McCoy scored 15 points and made five of her six free throws in helping Divide County pull away for a 39-33 win over Ray on Dec. 8.
Heide added 13 points for the Maroons, who shot 36 percent.
Marissa Veach had 13 points to lead the Jays.
Divide County faces New Town on the road Friday.
