Football falls in seesaw battle with Kenmare

By Jody Michael
The Divide County football team scored seven touchdowns for the second consecutive week, but Kenmare-Burke County matched it and finished with three more two-point conversions for a 54-48 victory at Cal Andrist Field in Crosby.
In total, the two offenses combined for 1,033 yards.
“The fans sure got their money’s worth on Friday night,” Maroons defensive coach Nate Nelson said. “It was an exciting game, and we had a chance to win it with less than a minute to go. In the end, they just made a couple more plays than us.”
Quarterback Dejuan Jenkins accounted for a career-high 399 all-purpose yards and six touchdowns, but an attempted two-minute drill to take a late lead was unsuccessful despite the Maroons’ recovery of an onside kick.
Divide County faced a 20-point hole as late as midway through the fourth quarter after allowing the Honkers to score touchdowns on six consecutive possessions.
Jenkins’ 4-yard touchdown run in the first quarter opened the scoring. He and Aidan Eriksmoen respectively ran the Maroons to leads of 12-8 and 20-16 before a Honker touchdown and conversion 12 seconds before halftime.
Kenmare then shut out Divide County in the third quarter and added two more touchdowns for a 20-point margin. Jenkins ran in two touchdowns early in the fourth quarter, but Kenmare responded both times.
Regardless, Jenkins continued to orchestrate a rally. First came a 36-second touchdown drive, the result of a 13-yard Alex Bailey kick return and consecutive pass completions of 33 yards to Troy Knudson and 17 yards to Tyler Deering.
The Maroons then intercepted a pass and struck again less than two minutes later on a 64-yard touchdown pass to Eriksmoen for a one-possession game with 2:03 remaining.
Divide County recovered the onside kick for a glimmer of hope until a pass play with 50 seconds left, on fourth-and-10 from the Honkers’ 33, fell short of a first down.
The Maroons’ defense struggled to stop its opponent for the second time in three games. This time, it was a combination of the passing and running game.
Honkers senior quarterback Hunter Rodin added 85 rushing yards to his 363 passing yards and five touchdowns.
“We faced a very accurate quarterback,” Nelson said. “I hope we don’t see any more guys who can throw as well as he did on Friday. They are a good offensive team, but we need to step up and make some more plays in coverage. When we have a team in fourth-and-long, we absolutely have to get off the field defensively; we weren’t able to do that.”
Divide County (1-2, 1-1 Region 6) plays Friday at Parshall. In their last meeting, the Maroons beat the Braves 36-14.
“They are much improved over last year and are in the mix for a playoff spot,” Nelson said. “The stakes will be very high.”
