While the Divide County football team’s game Friday was a chance to win a share of the region championship, Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood had other plans.
DC was unable to get either its offense or its defense going and fell 52-6.
The Maroons fell to 5-3 on the season; MLS improved to 7-1 with the win.
“It was hard to find any positives,” DC defensive coach Nate Nelson said. “We just got mauled all over the place. It was men vs. boys.”
“My mom told me when I was growing up that if I didn’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all,” DC offensive coach Bob Brown said. “I am taking her advice.”
MLS ran for 366 yards on 51 carries and scored seven touchdowns, led by Talon Thompson’s 161 yards and three TDs on 17 carries.
DC finished the game with negative rushing yards on 21 carries, while quarterback Dejuan Jenkins completed 4 of 12 passes with two interceptions. The Maroons moved the chains just twice.
Down 28-0 late in the first quarter after MLS running back Zavure Frech became the third Maverick to score in the game, Jenkins quickly responded with an 88-yard kick return for a touchdown.
DC could not sustain any momentum the touchdown generated, though, as MLS went back on the ground to grind out a 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive in return.
The Maroons managed to drive to the MLS 21 late in the second quarter, but on fourth-and-10, Jenkins threw an incomplete pass.
Aidan Eriksmoen had a team-high 13 tackles, and Colton Molloy and Tyler Deering each contributed six.
MLS took an 8-0 lead with 8:23 on the clock in the first quarter. After a Jenkins interception, the Mavericks drove 26 yards in six plays and 2:30 and scored on a 1-yard run by Statler Olson.
Stuck deep in their own territory for the majority of the first quarter, the Maroon offense could not get anything going, punting once but losing the ball under pressure three other times.
MLS continued to take advantage of the good field position, scoring on runs by Olson, Thompson and Frech for a 28-0 lead before Jenkins’ run.
The Maroons will play the Hettinger-Scranton Night Hawks in the opening round of the state playoffs, Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Central Time, in Hettinger. The meeting will be their first since 2012; Divide County won both of their previous encounters, in 2011 and 2012.
Hettinger tied for second place in Region 5 with a 4-2 record to go with a 6-2 overall mark.
“Fortunately, we have another game,” Brown said, “and we have a chance to get this taste out of our mouth and put together a stronger effort. It’s a new season, and we need to play at a much higher level.”
