Divide County rallies late, but falls 27-22 to Tioga

By Jody Michael
Devon Wilharm ran for four scores and Tioga held off Divide County’s second-half comeback for a 27-22 victory.
“It was a hard-fought game,” Tioga coach Tim Schaffer said. “We knew that coming in we’d have a tough time with these guys.”
It took until nearly the last play to assure the victory, cornerback Parker Jackson intercepting Maroons quarterback Aidan Eriksmoen with 38 seconds left.
“We just said we have to get a stop here,” Schaffer said. “Parker got back there and got enough depth and came up with that big interception.”
The Maroons (5-2) opened with three consecutive punts in the first half but still finished a score away from victory - and from keeping alive their unblemished Region 6 record.
“Tioga really controlled the time of possession and limited our offensive opportunities,” Divide County offensive coach Bob Brown said. “We struggled early in the game with some execution issues, but it got better as the game went along. Once again, the players never gave up, and we had an opportunity to win it at the end.”
Divide County rallied from 21-6 down in the second half with two touchdowns, the last a 73-yard kickoff return by Eriksmoen.
Tioga lost the ball on downs on its next drive but grabbed the interception on defense and closed out the victory, moving to 4-3. It also gave Tioga a playoff berth.
Wilharm accounted for 251 yards, all of those coming on the ground. He had a 3-yard TD run early in the third quarter to put the Pirates up 21-6. That’s when Divide County’s offense struck to give itself a possibility of coming back.
Tyler Deering scored on a 37-yard run, his second touchdown of the night. After Wilharm responded with a fourth TD, the Maroons immediately closed to 27-22 on Eriksmoen’s kickoff score to set up the intense ending moments.
Tioga opened the scoring in Divide County’s first visit since before Tioga’s former Williams County co-op team with Ray moved up to 11-man play in 2009. Wilharm ran 68 yards in six plays on the team’s first drive for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead.
“We had a little trouble containing their speed, and that was a concern coming into the game,” Divide County defensive coach Nate Nelson said. “Unfortunately, there was not a lot we could do to make our guys faster in one week of practice.”
Tioga maintained the pressure in the second quarter. Cole Marmon connected with Jaryn Rasmussen for an 8-yard pass on a third-and-6 play before eventually pitching to Wilharm for a 5-yard TD and a 14-0 lead.
The Maroons’ only points of the half came on a 3-yard touchdown run by Deering 30 seconds before intermission.
DC’s next matchup is at home Friday at 7 p.m. against the first-place Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood Mavericks. The winner gets the region’s top seed. Divide County has already secured a finish no worse than second, which guarantees a first-round playoff bye and second-round home game.
