Dejuan Jenkins rushed for 151 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead the Divide County football team (1-1, 0-1 Region 6) past Trenton-Trinity Christian, 49-8, in the Maroons’ first road game of the season Friday evening at Trenton.
Jenkins, DC’s sophomore quarterback who finished as the game’s leading rusher, reached that total on just eight carries and also completed three passes for 46 yards against Trenton (0-2, 0-1).
Freshman quarterback Isaac Ellingson completed 5 of 7 passes for 93 yards later in the game as the Maroons earned their 11th consecutive victory over the Tigers.
“Granted, we weren’t playing a Cavalier, but I was pleased with our energy level and effort,” DC offensive coach Bob Brown said. “We executed pretty well offensively, both on the ground and in the air. The offensive line blocked well and executed their assignments. The backs ran hard and made some great cuts.”
Trenton completed just one of six pass attempts, avoiding a shutout by connecting on a 41-yard pass play from Josh Zarling to Sven Torola in the fourth quarter.
Featuring a balanced offensive attack, DC accrued 472 net yards, including 333 on the ground and 139 in the air. The Maroons finished with 18 first downs, holding Trenton to just five.
“Our offense controlled the time of possession and kept the defense off the field a good part of the game,” DC defensive coach Nate Nelson said. “There was marked improvement in all aspects of our game. We were more aggressive on defense and tackled better. There is still room for improvement, but I’m pleased with the effort.”
The Maroons controlled the game from the start, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter and claiming a 35-0 lead by halftime.
Jenkins gave DC the lead with a 72-yard run for a touchdown and later connected on an 11-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Deering, who also had a rushing touchdown in the first half. Taylor Landsverk added an 8-yard score.
Deering broke off on a 46-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and the Maroons’ final score of the night was a 2-yard run by Joran Oien.
Two-point conversions came from a Jenkins pass to Troy Knudson and two Aidan Eriksmoen runs, and Jenkins also successfully converted a point-after kick in the second quarter.
DC will return to action against Kenmare-Burke County at Cal Andrist Field on Friday. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
“Kenmare will be a big challenge for us this coming Friday,” Nelson said. “They have a very good group of athletes and a very tough spread offense. We will need to improve a great deal in practice this week again.”
“They are a Cavalier-caliber team and present a lot of challenges,” Brown said. “We just need to worry about ourselves and focus on getting better every day.”
