DC boys struggle in Stanley Lions tournament

The Divide County boys’ basketball team dropped the seventh-place match of the Stanley Lions tournament, 76-45, to the North Shore Wildcats on Friday to remain winless on the season.
The Wildcats led by 11 after three quarters before outscoring the Maroons 26-6 in the fourth.
“We played much better when the tempo of the game was faster,” Divide County head coach Rodney Johnson said. “As soon as the pace was slowed down, our players started showing how tired they were.”
Guard Tyler Deering put up a team-high 14 points. Fellow guard Jacob Bird finished the game with 11 points.
“Each game we have improved as the players learn from the previous game,” Johnson said. “We have the want and the work ethic, so hopefully it will show up in games.”
Maroons fall to Titans
Deering’s first double-double of the season (18 points, 10 rebounds) was not enough for Divide County in losing a down-to-the-wire game to Burke County, 51-49, on Thursday afternoon.
Bird tossed in 14 points while adding eight rebounds. Ryder Beauclair pulled down 14 rebounds and recorded seven points in the setback.
The first period ended with an 18-9 score in favor of Divide County.
“We looked up at the score and saw a nine-point lead,” Johnson said, “so we let some of our intensity go, and we were never able to get the intensity back up to the level we started the game with.”
Burke County erased the Maroons’ lead, made the game-winning shot with less than 30 seconds left and walked away with the win.
“Lack of experience in those situations is what caused us to lose a tight one,” Johnson said.
Blue Jays prove too much
Bird led all scorers with 13 points, but the Stanley Blue Jays advanced in the first round with an 87-27 win over the Maroons on Dec. 15.
“We played very well in the first 12 minutes of the game,” Johnson said. “Stanley has a very good team this year, and we played right with them until we got tired. Through the first 12 minutes, I was very impressed with our ability and our work ethic.”
Keaton Oien finished with seven points and seven rebounds, and Colton Molloy and Deering respectively added four and three points.
Five Blue Jays players finished in double figures. Wyatt Hanson had 12 points.
After this Tuesday’s game against Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood, Divide County returns to the court on Jan. 2 at 4:30 p.m. vs. Sawyer.
