Crosby’s American Legion baseball team was eliminated from the West Region tournament by No. 8 Makoti, 5-4, on July 20 at Shiloh Christian School in Bismarck.
With the loss, the 10th-seeded Cubs finished the year 4-25.
“We played our best baseball of the season in the tournament,” coach Monte Ellingson said. “The kids were fired up to show that we were now a team to be reckoned with, and we did that. We were competitive in every game.”
The Cubs were able to manage just two hits during the contest.
Isaac Ellingson was tagged with the loss despite allowing just two earned runs.
“Isaac pitched a good game -- maybe not his best, but he gave us a chance to win,” Monte Ellingson said. “He had runners on in every inning but had a season-high nine strikeouts.”
Crosby jumped out in front in the first with an RBI ground out by Evan Eriksmoen and a dropped third strike that scored Aidan Eriksmoen.
Makoti erased that lead in the third, and the 2-2 score held until the seventh. Isaac Ellingson scored the go-ahead run on a much-debated interference ruling during a single by Tyler Deering, who added another run on a Joran Oien ground out.
Ellingson hit the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh, and both scored on separate defensive errors. Makoti then won on a two-out, bases-loaded single.
Crosby falls vs. Surrey
Crosby had fallen into the loser’s bracket with an 11-6 loss to No. 2 Surrey earlier in the day.
Alex Bailey tossed five innings and allowed five earned runs on nine hits. Tyler Harward pitched the sixth in relief.
“Alex pitched his best game of the year against a very good-hitting team,” Monte Ellingson said.
At the plate, Bailey and Isaac Ellingson led the way with two RBIs each.
The Cubs’ first hit of the game, coming in the first inning, was a single from Aidan Eriksmoen that scored Peterson, who added another run in the third on a Bailey single.
But Surrey scored in every inning to take the lead and pull ahead by as many as nine runs.
Crosby reduced that margin with four runs in the seventh. Bradon Peterson and Aidan Eriksmoen both scored on ground outs, and Ellingson tripled to score Bailey and Keaton Oien.
Crosby takes down Hettinger
Crosby rallied for five runs in the final three innings and upset No. 7 Hettinger, 8-6, in the first round June 19.
Though the Cubs only managed two hits, one was a two-out, two-run double by Isaac Ellingson in the top of the seventh to score Deering and Evan Eriksmoen and break a 6-6 tie.
Every Cub reached base at least once, but it was mostly by virtue of six walks and six errors from a Hettinger team that had defeated Crosby 10-2 in their previous meeting. Deering and Evan Eriksmoen each brought home one Cub via fielder’s choice.
“We had to take advantage of our opportunities because we only had two hits,” Monte Ellingson said. “We ran the bases aggressively and forced some bad throws.”
Evan Eriksmoen tossed all seven frames and allowed just two earned runs to score to pick up his first win of the season while fanning seven batters and scattering seven hits.
“Evan pitched his best game of the year,” Monte Ellingson said.
Crosby opened up the scoring early. After Aidan Eriksmoen singled and stole second, an error by the shortstop brought him home. But Hettinger followed with two runs for a 2-1 advantage.
In the third, Deering batted in Evan Eriksmoen and scored himself on an error. However, three Cub errors in the bottom of the inning put Hettinger back on top, 5-3, and the Bears extended the lead in the fourth with an RBI single.
Crosby answered back with runs in each of the final three frames. Evan Eriksmoen batted in his brother in the fifth and then scored on an error; and Ellingson walked and scored in the sixth to tie the game and set up his seventh-inning heroics.
