Cubs drop doubleheader to Bismarck

By Jody Michael
Bismarck handed Crosby's American Legion baseball team defeats of 25-5 and 12-1 in a doubleheader Monday afternoon at Vournas Field.
The Cubs are home again today at 5 p.m., hosting Bottineau for two non-region games.
Bradon Peterson and Alex Bailey had the most success at the plate Monday, each posting three-hit days and scoring one run each. Grant Kocher, Isaac Ellingson, Dejuan Jenkins and Aidan and Evan Eriksmoen also had hits.
Crosby had a 2-1 lead in the first inning of game one: Aidan Eriksmoen singled and scored on an error, and a Bailey single drove in Evan Eriksmoen.
Bailey ripped a double to left-center in the third inning to plate Peterson and Evan Eriksmoen, then scored himself on a Kocher single.
In the second game, Bailey drove in Evan Eriksmoen again for another RBI and Crosby's lone run.
The Cubs called up two members of the Midget team in order to play the game, as a few players are out of town.
Right fielder Anthony Johnson caught a fly ball in the first game and drew three walks, while Easton Eriksmoen recorded three putouts at second base.
Renville too much in 11-2 loss
Renville County put Thursday’s game away with a five-run third inning to hand Crosby an 11-2 defeat in Lansford.
Crosby collected four hits on the evening. Muskrats starting pitcher Dalton Moberg was in control over his seven-inning stint on the mound. He relied on his mostly solid defense behind him as he struck out just five Crosby batters.
The third frame started well enough as Evan Eriksmoen doubled with two outs and scored on a subsequent error. But in the bottom half, a fly ball that could have ended the inning with no damage done was dropped, leading to five Muskrat runs and making it 7-1.
“The errors did us in,” coach Monte Ellingson said. “A big one with two outs in the third opened the floodgates.”
The Cubs touched Moberg for one more run in the fifth. Aidan Eriksmoen singled and scored on another error.
Isaac Ellingson (1-3) took the loss, though 10 of the 11 runs he allowed were unearned.
Crosby drops Burlington games
The Cubs dropped a doubleheader June 20 against Burlington, 7-1 and 24-5.
Aidan Eriksmoen scored the first run of the first game, but the Bulldogs ultimately got to his pitching.
He was able to strand six Burlington runners while five others ran into outs on the basepaths. Isaac Ellingson turned an unassisted double play at shortstop in the second inning.
“Aidan did a good job minimizing the damage despite giving up six hits and walking eight batters,” Monte Ellingson said.
The Cubs had just two hits but left seven runners on base.
The second game was a baserunning parade for Burlington, with 15 hits, seven walks, eight hit batsmen, six errors and four wild pitches.
“Too many walks and hit batters,” Monte Ellingson said.
Keaton Oien scored in the second on a passed ball, and Isaac Ellingson singled in Kocher. Peterson, Bailey and Evan Eriksmoen each scored in the third.
Burlington’s Cole Grosche was 5 for 5 with a home run, two doubles, singles, four runs and four RBIs.
After today's home game vs. Bottineau, Crosby heads to Watford City on Tuesday next week to face Hettinger.
